The Next Big Search Engine

Google, Yahoo! and Baidu…move aside! There are new search engines in town…

Why do you use search engines? Find something. Surf or browse. Entertainment. Just to see what’s going on.

All of the above apply to me. I am spending less and less time on the generic search engines, such as Google or Baidu, because I know generally what I am looking for. When I want to buy a new tablet computer, I use the eBay or Amazon search engines. When I want to figure out where to go out for dinner, I use the Yelp search engine. When I want some information, I use the Wikipedia search engine. Sometimes I just want to be entertained. For that I use the YouTube search engine. Our online experiences are run by a multitude of search engines. We are a search engine society.

So, what’s next? As mobile devices, such as iPhone, Android, iPad and other tablets, start penetrating the electronics market their ubiquity seems inevitable. This means that mobile app stores will become the next great search engines.

Is this even possible? Of course it is. Look at all the things you can find in a mobile app store… shops, games, knowledge, useful tools, news, events… And the list goes on. Not convinced yet? According to Asymco, an industry analysis advisory firm, iOS users are downloading more than 17.6M apps A DAY! That’s over 733,000 apps/hour, over 12,000 apps/min, over 200 apps/second. And that’s just on one mobile platform!!! This market is about to explode! You want to be on this bandwagon!

If you are a company and you want to be found in mobile app stores NOW is the time to make a act.
1. Have a mobile strategy! Simply having a mobile-optimized website is not a strategy.
2. Create mobile vehicles to execute that strategy. That means have a mobile-optimized website, have a mobile app on, at least, App Store and Android Market.
3. Be a bigger fish in a smaller pond. Plainly, get yourself and your company onto a mobile app store before the masses get a clue!

  2. Why do established brands and companies develop mobile apps?…

I agree with Leanne completely. However, it is worth noting that mobile-optimized websites are different than mobile apps. If you are asking why companies are moving into mobile apps you are asking a pretty complex question. The market is pretty green …
